How to Adjust Soft-Close Toilet Seat Hinges

Soft-close toilet seats work because they have a special type of hinge that allows the toilet seat to close on its own very slowly and quietly. If your soft-close toilet seat hinge is malfunctioning, here are a few steps to fix it.

  1. Slow down the metal peg hinges. Open your toilet seat and look for the metal pegs attached to the disc on the back of the toilet, onto which the hinges on the toilet seat slide.

  2. Lift the toilet seat directly off the hinge from the upright position. Hold the soft-close toilet seat in the fully open position. Hold the top and bottom or sides of the seat and carefully pull it straight up from the metal pegs. If your toilet seat doesn't lift straight up, try tilting it forward a few degrees to see if you can lift it from that position.

  3. Turn the toilet seat upside down on a flat work surface. Flip your seat so that the metal hinges are exposed, and lay the seat flat on a table or other flat surface.

  4. Pull out the cylindrical dampers on both sides of the seat back. Grab the dampers with your fingers and pull the cylinders out of the holes they are in. These dampers actually control how fast the seats close.

  5. Rotate the damper towards the back of the seat to make it close more slowly. Rotate each hinge damper toward the back of the seat, making sure the shape of the dampers aligns with the shape of the holes they slide into. This will slow down the seat hinge so they can close it more gently and quietly. Not all soft-close toilet seat hinges are adjustable. If the dampers have grooves so you can only get in and out of them in 1 position, they are not adjustable.

  6. Slide the hinge damper back into the hinge assembly. Push the cylindrical damper back into the hole in the hinge assembly on one side. Repeat for the damper on the other side. If the soft-close dampers have multiple positions, you can set them to different speeds, double check that you place them in the same position on both sides of the seat. Otherwise, the seat and lid may close at different speeds.

  7. Put the toilet seat back on the toilet. Align the holes on the seat hinge with the grooves on the toilet. Place the seat back on the hinge pegs so that it is in an upright position.
